Gesture sensing interface: Phone conversation with hand gestures

gesture1

A gesture sensing interface is on its way, if we believe the news mongers. Being developed by Patrick Baudisch, professor of computer science at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Postdam, Germany, and his research student, Sean Gustafson, the gesture sensing interface will require no physical input device like touch screen or a keyboard. Instead, a small video recorder and a microprocessor attached to the user’s clothing will capture and analyze all the hand gestures. Design Your Own Kindle — And Win It!

Geeker electronics: kindle Design Your Own Kindle — And Win It!Lusting after Amazon’s awesome new e-reader? Maybe you’d love to play around with one but can’t justify the price. Well, Amazon, Engadget and Adafruit Industries have teamed together to throw a design-your-own-Kindle contest with five of the gadgets given away. All you have to do is create the design for the back.

Here’s the deal: we’re asking you to think of a design that would look great on the Kindle’s brushed metal back — something that means a lot to you, something that’ll make passers-by drool with envy when you casually hold up your new toy while reading The Economist from the comfort of your train, plane, or bus seat. Draft up that design (seriously, make sure it’s awesome, because you’ll be facing some stiff competition) and send it to us. We’ll post some of our favorites as finalists and hand the reigns over to you — our dear readers — to select five winners who will each have their designs laser-etched into reality on the backs of their very own Kindles!

Designs must be submitted as vector art (use Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Inkscape or something similar to create) and the due date is one second before midnight, Friday the 24th of July. Read the rules. Design. Submit. Win!

(The pic is my own submission, IcosaBeetle.)

Ding Dong, you have mail
